MD5 (Message-Digest Algorithm 5) is a cryptographic hash function producing a 128-bit hash value.
It is the successor of MD4 and was considered more secure (as of 2018, it should not be used for scenarios requiring strong cryptographic hashing). Developed by Ronald Rivest in 1991, who also developed MD4.
